Our Story

"As an architect dedicated to creating beautiful, sustainable designs that reflect the spirit of the Pacific Northwest, I’ve long been drawn to natural materials that age gracefully and tell a story over time. Wood, with its warmth and connection to place, is a favorite—but traditional wood exteriors often require frequent refinishing, leading to both financial and environmental costs.

In my search for a more sustainable approach, I discovered Shou Sugi Ban—the traditional Japanese technique of charring wood to naturally preserve and protect it. This centuries-old method brings out the wood’s inherent beauty while eliminating the need for toxic coatings and ongoing maintenance.

Inspired by its durability, aesthetic richness, and ecological sensibility, we began producing Shou Sugi Ban locally in Arlington, Washington.
